Lemington Riverside Primary School

Equality and diversity

At Lemington Riverside Primary School, we are proud to be a fully inclusive school at the heart of our community. We are committed to ensuring that every child, family and member of staff is treated with dignity, respect and fairness, and that all members of our school community have equal opportunities to succeed.

Our Commitment

We are committed to meeting our obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED). This means we actively work to:

  • Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • Advance equality of opportunity for all
  • Foster good relations between different groups

These duties apply to all aspects of school life, including admissions, teaching, provision of services and wider opportunities .

We recognise and celebrate diversity across all protected characteristics, including:

  • Disability
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender reassignment
  • Pregnancy and maternity

Our School Values

Our approach to equality and diversity is rooted in our core values:

  • We are Lemington – proud of our diverse community
  • We are collaborative – every voice is valued
  • We are resilient – supporting individuals to overcome barriers
  • We are disciplined – promoting fairness and respect
  • We are global – celebrating cultures and perspectives
  • We are ambitious – high expectations for every child

Together, these values help us create a school where everyone feels they belong and can thrive .

How We Meet Our Duties

1. Eliminating Discrimination

We ensure that discrimination, harassment and prejudice are not tolerated in any form.

  • Staff and governors are regularly trained on equality responsibilities
  • Policies such as behaviour and anti-bullying reflect our commitment
  • Incidents are addressed promptly and effectively

2. Advancing Equality of Opportunity

We actively remove barriers and support all pupils to achieve their potential.

We do this by:

  • Monitoring attainment, progress and participation across groups
  • Providing targeted support for vulnerable learners
  • Making reasonable adjustments for pupils with additional needs
  • Ensuring all pupils can access the full curriculum and wider opportunities

The Equality Act recognises that schools may need to take additional steps to support some pupils, particularly those with disabilities, to ensure fairness and inclusion .

3. Fostering Good Relations

We promote respect, understanding and positive relationships across our school.

This includes:

  • A curriculum that reflects diverse cultures, beliefs and experiences
  • Assemblies and events that celebrate diversity
  • Strong anti-bullying approaches
  • Engagement with our local community

Equality in Practice

Equality is central to all decision-making in our school. We consider the needs of different groups when planning policies, trips, curriculum and provision.

For example, we consider whether:

  • Activities are accessible to all pupils
  • Religious observances are respected
  • Facilities are equitable for all
  • Support is in place where needed

This reflects our duty to give “due regard” to equality in all decisions, ensuring fairness is embedded in everyday practice .

Equality Objectives (2026–2030)

We review and publish our equality objectives at least every four years, as required by legislation .

Our current priorities are:

1. Reduce gaps in attainment and engagement

We aim to identify and close gaps for disadvantaged and vulnerable pupils, including those with SEND and from minority backgrounds.

2. Strengthen inclusive practice

We continue to develop high-quality provision so all pupils, including those with SEND and disabilities, can fully access school life.

3. Promote diversity and respect

We ensure our curriculum and wider experiences reflect and celebrate diversity, preparing pupils for life in modern Britain.

4. Develop staff and governor understanding

We ensure all staff and governors are confident in their responsibilities under equality legislation.

These objectives are monitored regularly and reviewed by governors .
