LEMINGTON NEWS UPDATE: MARCH 2019

Dear Parents, Carers and the community of Lemington,

PARENT MEETINGS:

Parents evenings take place in school next week on Wednesday 27th March and Thursday 28th March. Appointment sheets have now been displayed outside the main classroom entrances. We are also offering email/telephone updates to support those parents who work or who are unable to come into school on those evenings.

NEW SCHOOL LOGO:

Congratulations to Daniel M and Jack A whose logo designs will be combined to create our new school logo. The logo features the Lemington Glassworks, linking to our industrial past as well as the Scotswood Bridge, showing our close proximity to the River Tyne. The logo will also feature our hashtag. Daniel and Jack will now work with a professional graphic designer to bring their design to life! We aim to have the logo on our jumpers/cardigans for September 2019 – please note that we will not expect you to purchase any new uniform until your child is ready for it.

SPORT UPDATE:

A huge congratulations to our Y5/6 Boys’ football team who had a great final three games of the season beating Waverley 5-1, Westerhope 3-1 and Cheviot 3-0. Lemington Riverside finish the season in an impressive 4th place, just 1 point off 2nd. This is a great achievement, not only because it is our first season with a football team, but also because we are one of the smallest schools in the league!

IRISH-THEMED DAY!

Our St. Patrick’s Day curriculum-themed day went down fantastically well. Teachers across the school planned lessons linked to the theme of Ireland and the children really enjoyed the day and were enthusiastic about what they had learned! We will be planning out whole-school topic themes for our new curriculum which launches in September 2019!

ANTI-BULLYING:

On Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th March we welcome Ann Foxley-Johnson, an EU Anti-Bullying Ambassador to Lemington Riverside. Ann will be working with our children to form a brand new Riverside Anti-Bullying Team. She will also be running a parent, carer and grandparent workshop on the theme of keeping your child safe in the online and real world – this will take place on Tuesday 26th March at 9am in the Main Hall. There will be free tea/coffee and biscuits for all who attend, with one person who comes along going home with a £10 voucher for Coffee on the Corner.

EASTER RAFFLE:

Tickets for our Easter Raffle will be on sale from the Main Reception from Monday 25th March priced at 10p each. We have a range of delicious prizes to be won! Thank you to all staff, governors, etc. who have donated prizes so far! If anybody would like to donate prizes, please drop them in to the Main Office.

FOOTBALLS:

After Easter we will no longer be allowing leather/caser footballs on the playgrounds. We’ve had a number of children hurt with these footballs and damage to the building has also been caused. We will be providing new lighter footballs for the children to play with. We are happy for children to bring in foam or ‘penny floater’ footballs to play with.

PARKING/SMOKING:

We are pleased that the number of drivers stopping on the yellow lines seems to have gone down over the past few weeks. Please note that a number of people received fixed penalty fines for parking on the yellow lines – remember these are here to keep our children safe! Thank you also to parents/carers who are no longer smoking at the school gates – this is so important for the health and wellbeing of our children and non-smoking parents and staff.

EASTER HOLIDAYS:

It’s almost the end of what has been an incredibly busy term for us all here at Lemington Riverside. Once again, I would like to thank everybody for the welcome you have given me and your enthusiasm for the changes we continue to make to improve our school. Children break up for the Easter Holidays at the normal time on Thursday 4th April (Friday 5th is a staff training day where we are planning our exciting new curriculum for September!) – children return to school on Tuesday 23rd April (Monday 22nd is Easter Monday).

Take care,

Mr. Heeley - Head Teacher
