Spring Term 2 Newsletter 1

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back!

We hope that you’ve all had an enjoyable half term break. It’s been great to see all of the children back in school today and we have an exciting half term ahead of us.

World Book Day:

We are delighted to be celebrating World Book Day at Lemington Riverside this Thursday 3rd March. Check out the following update from our Assistant Headteacher Ms Turner:

“At Lemington Riverside Primary School, we love books! We read in school every day, across all subjects and on Thursday, 3rd March, children will celebrate their love of words and stories by taking part in a range of exciting activities. The highlights are listed below:

  • EYFS will be surprised by a special visitor!
  • Children will partake in a World Book Day video adventure.
  • We have invested in a reading tent and the children will have the opportunity to read with peers across year groups. This will be filled with blankets and cushions and be the perfect setting to curl up and read. Afterwards, they can enjoy hot chocolate and cookies with friends.
  • Design and then create a favourite book character onto wooden spoons.
  • Children will be focusing on a special book within class.

We are inviting children to come dressed in comfy clothes to ‘curl up and read’ in – anything from PJ’s, dressing gowns, joggers or onesies – they can even bring their favourite blanket or teddy if they wish!

Thank you for your continued support in our quest to encourage a love of books in all children. Please remember that we also have our ‘Parent and Carer Book Swap’ at the main entrance of school for you to borrow books to read at home too.”

Catch-up tuition sessions:

We are pleased to confirm that Covid catch up tuition sessions will be re-starting this term for all children in years Reception up to Year 6. The sessions have been extremely useful in plugging some of the gaps in learning that children experienced in English and Maths due to the Covid lockdowns.

Lego League:

We are delighted to have been successful in our bid to become a ‘Lego League’ school! Starting from this week, children across the school will all take part in the Lego League project which develops children’s design technology, engineering and computing skills.

Science Week visits to Beamish:

We are delighted to confirm that children in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will visit Beamish Museum in County Durham later in March to take part in a number of exciting science week activities. More details will follow to parents/carers of children in those classes in a separate letter.

Swimming:

Starting today our Year 5 class will take part in a 10 day intensive swimming course at Gosforth Pool every afternoon up to and including Friday 11th March. This follows on from a very successful swimming course for our Year 6 children last half term at the Royal Grammar School.

Dates for the diary:

Monday 28th February/Tuesday 1st March: Children in Year 1 will part in an art/history project with local artists and historians celebrating the 1,900th birthday of Hadrian’s Wall.

Monday 28th February – Friday 11th March (inclusive): Children in Year 5 will go swimming to Gosforth Pool every afternoon as part of an intensive swimming course.
